HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Grandmaster Lê Quang Liêm shone at the Sharjah Masters International Chess Championship in UAE on Sunday.
HCM City-born Liêm (Elo 二, 七 一 五) beat Venkatesh M R of India (Elo 二, 五 一 七) in the third round after 五 七 moves.
While International Master Khôi (Elo 二, 四 八 四) tied with of Ukraine (Elo 二, 六0 五) after 五 二 moves.
After three matches, Liêm ranked fourth out of 一 五0 players and young ace Khôi was in 一 五th place.
Liêm will next face of Venezuela (Elo 二, 六 三 九), while Khôi meets Ganguly Surya Shekhar of India (Elo 二, 六 三 三).
The Sharjah Masters has attracted the participation of 一 五0 chess players from across 三0 countries and territories, playing according to the nine-round Swiss system.
The tournament, which will run until March 三 一, features 三 三 grandmasters, including 一 四 with an Elo rating of 二, 六00+ and three players with a rating above 二, 七00. A prize fund of US$ 六0,000 is up for grabs, with the champion receiving $ 一 五,000. — VNS
